Skype Qik Group Video Messaging

0 to 1 product design, user research, design leadership

  • I was the design lead for the first version of Skype Qik, a video messaging app built on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.

Since Skype was very feature rich, we wanted to test asynchronous video messaging features in a more lightweight package that was phone number based vs Skype username/email based.

This was a special project was comprised of a ‘Tiger Team’ selected from within Skype to quickly design and build a competitive group video messaging app to evaluate asynchronous video messaging as a possible integration into Skype’s main client.

  • The design team included myself as the product design lead, 3 visual designers, 1 user researcher, 2 interaction designers (1 part time), 1 web developer for the design phase.

Each mobile platform had it’s own engineering and testing team for the implementation phase.

    • Established a vision for testing out a ‘Snackable’ app from Skype that was lightweight, quick, and fun.

    • Defined interaction models solo in early stages, then secured stakeholder buy-in to scale the team

    • Maintained a unified design with platform-specific sect for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone

    • Ensured alignment with executive management, design, product, engineering, and QA teams across all platforms to launch the product

    • Led the product experience across a multi-disciplinary team setting a vision and strategy to get there

      • 3 visual designers

      • 2 interaction designers

      • 1 user researcher

      • 1 web developer

    • Initiated and led product design strategy from ideation through launch

    • Enabled Skype to evaluate the asynchronous video space as a possible way to expand Skype’s footprint

    • The unique interaction model is my original design for this app, which has now been copied by other companies, such as https://www.marcopolo.me/

    • The launch was successful over the course of several releases and platforms allowing further understanding of how people used asynchronous video

    • This functionality was eventually integrated into Skype mobile apps and the app was discontinued in 2016
